A medical abortion, sometimes referred to as a medication abortion, is a non-surgical method of ending a pregnancy with prescription medications. Up to nine weeks into a pregnancy, it is a safe and non-invasive choice.
Is it possible for me to have a medical abortion?
The first nine weeks of pregnancy are the best time to use the abortion pill. Those with ectopic pregnancies, blood clotting issues, chronic adrenal failure, long-term corticosteroid use, intrauterine devices (IUDs), allergies to prescription drugs, or restricted access to emergency care should not use this medication.
Medical Abortion Overview
This procedure involves the use of two medications:
First Pill: Blocks progesterone, halting pregnancy growth.
Second Pill: Induces cramping and bleeding to expel the embryo.
Medical abortion involves the following:
Taking medications within a 48-hour window.
Experiencing bleeding, cramping, and other side effects.
Preparing for a medical abortion:
A consultation and an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy will be part of your medical abortion treatment. After the procedure, expect bleeding and cramps, so set up a comfortable area with heating pads, painkillers, and absorbent pads.
Experience Following Medical Abortion
Common side effects include:
- Vaginal bleeding and cramping.
- Nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and diarrhea.
Pain management:
The pain you will experience is similar to strong period cramps. Over-the-counter pain relievers are generally effective.
